May 2017: Heather Zimmerman

Heather started waitressing at a small restau- rant in Florida, at the young age of eighteen. When Heather moved back home to Pennsylvania, she started working at Kokomos as a bartender and quickly worked her way up to managing, by the age of twenty-one. She contributes her promotions to hard worker and expand- ing her knowledge base. She would also ask a lot of ques- tion. Heather has been working in the restaurant indus- try for over fifteen years.

Heather’s favorite thing about her job is making up new drinks for people. Her advice for others wanting to be a good bartender, is to learn to multi task and carry multiple drink orders at one time. She states “no one likes to wait for service”. When Heather is not creating new cocktails for her customers, she is a full-time student. She doesn’t get a lot of free time but when she does, she enjoys traveling, looking at art and a enjoying a nice glass of wine.

Stephen “Stevie” Simpson started off as a busboy/dishwasher in the early 2000’s. Since then, he has become proficient in every job, filling every position in the restaurant! While many bartenders and mixolo- gists have invested in training courses to teach them how to bartend, Stevie believes that getting your foot in the door is the best way to get the job. He believes that as long as you learn everything you can about every respon- sibility of the job, you can climb your way to the best shifts behind the bar!

Stevie’s favorite thing about his job is meeting new people, rooting for his favorite Philadelphia teams on the big screens, and creating new drinks. Try his Peach Long Island Iced Tea or Irish Trash Can! When asked to give advice to a prospective bartender, Stevie says, “you need to treat every guest like a friend and to be patient both as a server and a customer.” He also believes that having hands-on experience in all aspects of the industry is really the key to being the best employee you can be. March 2017: Daniela Bonadies

Daniela Bonadies started in the industry when she was told it was a great way to make amazing money. She started as a cocktail server and worked her way to bar tending, and the rest is history! Daniela’s favorite thing about her job is the people she meets. She has met several awesome people over her years of working in the industry. Daniela feels sometimes it’s like “Cheers” where everybody knows your name. Daniela’s has met so many people over the years, if you ever need a mechanic, a lawyer or carpenter she knows whom you should call.

Daniela’s advice to being a good bartender is patience and an outgoing personality. She feels the first one you need and the second one is what works! When asked what she likes to do when she’s not bartending at Cheerleader’s, she says “Believe it or not, I’m a big nerd and read a lot of books in my free time.” Next time you’re in Philadelphia make sure you stop by and say “hello” to Daniela.

Sarah Hymes first got her start in the industry when she took interest in her family’s business, Nathan’s Cafe. Sarah felt the best way to learn how to bartend was behind the bar. Soon enough, she was trained to mix drinks, and the rest was history! Throughout her time spent in the industry, Sarah has learned that in order to be a great bartender, she must be able to strike up a conversation with anyone and make sure she’s paying attention to her customers, without being too overbearing.

 

Sarah’s favorite thing about her job is interacting with her customers and meeting new people, while staying busy. Sarah’s advice to new bartenders is to be creative, try new things, stay consistent and most importantly, stay confident! When Sarah is not at Nathan’s Bar & Grill you can find her in the kitchen creating something delicious to eat or planning a social gathering. She also loves to travel and spend time with her family, friends and two beautiful children.

John Costanzo started in the industry because he felt it was an easy way to make money while attending school. John has turned the restau- rant industry into his passion and his career as General Manager of the Belvedere Inn, Lan- caster, PA.

John’s favorite thing about his career is a tie between creating new cocktail recipes and making connections with his customers every- day. John feels being a good bartender consist of being an expert at mixology, a customer service therapist and enforcing the law. He feels you literally have to be a “jack of all trades”. John’s advice to new bartenders is to be passion- ate about what you do and you’ll be successful at your job. When John isn’t managing at the Belvedere Inn you can find him golfing or spending time with his family and friends.

Kendra Schell started in the restaurant industry at a young age. Kendra’s friend’s family owned a local restaurant in downtown Mechanicsburg. Kendra’s friend’s parents offered her a job at the restaurant because she spent so much time there. Kendra started out busing tables and washing dishes and the rest is history. She moved onto other restau- rants and ended up with her mentor, Jim learning the ins and outs of the bartending business. Kendra is forever grateful for having Jim take her under his wing.

Kendra’s favorite things about her job at Snapper’s Bar & Grill are her regular customers. She has worked at Snappers for a little over ten years and she considers her customers as dear friends. Kend- ra’s advice to being a good bartender is to have good listening skills and to do it right the first time, no matter how busy you get. When Kendra isn’t behind the bar she likes to spend time with her Bernese Mountain Dog, Kai. They dress up in their Steelers and Penn State jerseys and watch the football games together.

Suzanne Fetter has always worked in the restau- rant industry. Suzanne’s first job was in high school when she was fourteen. She began bartend- ing quite by accident. Suzanne was in her mid-twenties working as a server and her bartend- er decided to quit suddenly. Her manager gave her the opportunity to bartend at the restaurant and the rest is history. Suzanne has been bartending ever since!

There are a lot of aspects of the job Suzanne enjoys but she likes creating and crafting unique cock- tails for her customers. It is Suzanne’s creative outlet and she has very supportive managers that allow her to create new cocktails for their seasonal menus. Suzanne feels like she is being paid to have great conversations and laughs with good friends. Suzanne feels multi-tasking is very important. She also finds smiling at the customers and acknowledging them goes a long way.

Nicole Hossler started her bar tending career at the young age of 18, at Applebee’s. Nicole has not worked in a corporate restaurant since her Applebee’s days. However, she feels corporate restaurants are a great way to learn about the industry. According to Nicole “Once you have the skills, you can go anywhere and use them”. She had moved to Florida for a while and worked at the Tiki Bar before returning home to Pennsylvania.

Nicole feels working at The Firehouse Restaurant has allowed her to meet people from all over the county. She has met a lot of interesting people at work. She believes to be successful, a good bartender should be observant, pleasant and if they don’t remember your name, at least they will remember your drink. Nicole has been working at The Firehouse Restaurant for the past three years during the day. “I love our house favorites, Bloody Mary’s and the staple drink, Black Martini”! When Nicole isn’t at work she likes to travel to warm places. Be sure to stop by and see Nicole during the day and have her make one of her ‘house favorites’.

Becca Tillman first started out in the industry 20 years ago in Tunica, Mississippi at Cesars Casino. After making her way as a server , she decided to work her way to becoming a bartender. Reflecting on her time spent in the hospitality industry she loves the camaraderie with her co-workers and being able to make someone smile after they have had a bad day.

According to Becca, “Being in this industry is not for everyone. It’s not just ‘slinging drinks’. You have to be able to multitask and adapt to whatever situation is handed to you. Being able to read your customers and their needs, is a plus for sure!” When she isn’t behind the bar, Becca can be found throwing ball in the park with Shogun, her Doberman Pinscher.
